Hello Patrica, After having many discussions with citizens of So. Utah, I feel a need to ask some pointed questions. My questions are: Where is the Cross? Was a cross requested and denied? Shouldn't the memorial be a replica of the original Cairn that had A Cross atop with the engraved Biblical scripture? Many people I talk to in Cedar City and abroad wonder why there isn't one. Is this a religious statement from the LDS church, still remaining in control of the destiny of History? Well I guess that was direct, I pray you will answer, because absolutely no one has as of yet except Will Bagley. Sincerely, Sheryl Stratton

This is the most horrific injustice in American History and makes me very sad when I think of the terror these innocent people surely felt. Then, to think that the guilty got away with this slaughter. Or did they? I can only hope they are constantly repeating their act in Hell, especially Brigham Young. Why wasn't he and his fellow murderers arrested? Since they were not, I feel that we owe them something. Thank You, Donna Bryan

I am a student at the UCA in Conway Arkansas. I am writing a term paper on this event. I found out that the great great granddaught of John. D. Lee and also the great great granddaughter of Banker the leader of the wagon train - both work in the history department of UCA. I thought that was very interesting. I am a history major and minor in Arkansas History. This is an event that is important to be remembered. Thank you for your site and great information.

I was given a movie called "September Dawn" to watch as i study historic events in america. I was angered and saddened by what i was watching and though it happened so long ago i viewed it as if it were happening today. There are no words that i nor anyone can say to south the hearts of those that have to live to remember and deal with so much hatred and loss. It is worse than any war i have seen and studied. It is christmastime and in all the festivities i dont ever forget what i am celebrating and remember what has been sadness in remembering also. May God be always near those who are victims and forgive the men who made the victims loose so much life for no good reason. Sincerely Michele (keller) Ingles From Saranac Lake N.Y.

There have been many crimes brought to justice with less evidence. Punitive recoveries are available to these descendants of what amounts to Capitol Murder charges. The only way to bring pentance from powerful cults is in their bank accounts... such as the Klu Klux Klan. Also the land purchased by the LDS could be reclaimed under the imminent domain legistaion. For once, let justice truly be done by a National Historical Sight so that further studies be done to lay bare the whole truth.

My great great grandfather was Zealey Moss Wynn who tried to save Perley Pratt from wounds he had received from an angry mob. Pratt was left dying in front of Zealy's blacksmith shop in Alma AR . Weeks later, according to family history, Zealy left his home just in front of a gang of Mormons intent on killing anybody who had any thing to do with Pratts death.....He was never seen again. My take is that Zealy Moss Wynn was the first victim of this massacre......Jack

I just wanted to add one more thought, since all this is new to me, I just learned of it, and I'm still processing my emotions. I've always considered religious fanaticism and greed to be the greatest motivators of human atrocities. But the more I've read of the history, the generals who testified and the one convicted's statement he was made a scapegoat for Brigham Young who must have given the order, I can only say this: If Mormons truly want forgiveness for this horrendous crime against humanity, and I sincerely believe many do, they need to denounce the murderer of innocents, my family the Fanchers & Millers; denounce the murderer who gave the orders that innocent people be slaughtered: unarmed, men, women, and children. They need to denounce Brigham Young as prophet, saint, founder of their religion and redefine Mormonism based on conscience and the mysterium tremendum that connects all life. We are one. Brigham Young was a murderer. This is just my opinion, I don't expect everyone to agree, but if we found out the Pope or leader of any other religion committed such an atrocity, would he still be revered by that group? If so, then it's just business as usual and nothing to do with God.

My great-great-great grandmother was a Fancher. I've had some difficulty tracing her line, but did find some in Arkansas. I just found out about this incident and haven't yet processed my emotional response. I find it difficult to say how I feel about the Mormon involvement, but this tragedy only demonstrates the atrocities humans commit when religious fanaticism is the motivation for how they regard human life.

Sad to say I have never heard of this event in history. It seems that whoever writes our history books does not want to include some of the darker side of our history. I am thankful to people like you who make this known to everyone. I was terribly shocked at man's cruelty and inhumanity to his fellow man. It is even more shocking to think that Mormons did this from directions of their hierarchy and then tried a cover-up for many years thereafter. I have certainly lost respect for this religion and their refusal to take responsibility for their actions. I do hope these families receive some sort of compensation which is so long overdue. Again thank you for providing this wonderful web site in memory of those very brave families from Arkansas who did not deserve this.

I visited the site for the first time in December 2009, having read about it in history prior to that time. The power of the actual place is stunning. Then to try to understand what happened here on September 11, 1857, I purchased at Deseret Book Store in St. George, Utah the latest comprehensive book of several that have been published about the tragedy: Massacre at Mountain Meadows, by R.W. Walker, R.E. Turley Jr., and G.M. Leonard; Oxford University Press, Inc. (2008). After reading it, it strikes me that the cause of the tragedy was a combination of (1) theft, (2) blind obedience, and (3) cowardice. It has been also asserted that there was as well a level of paranoia in the territory, due to the events of the imminent “Utah War” (between U.S. Pres. James Buchannan and LDS Pres. Brigham Young). However the validity of the latter notion seems doubtful to me, since other wagon companies made their own safe passage without incident at the very same time. The book highlights: “At each point along the chain of acts and decisions – especially in Iron and Washington Counties – a single personal choice or policy might have brought a different result.” (Preface, Page xiv.) No one at the time obviously so acted, which was cowardice. Theft is already condemned by the Eighth of the Ten Commandments in Exodus Chapter 20 of the KJV. As is murder, by the Sixth. Today, the Mountain Meadows Massacre stands as a bold testimonial against blind obedience of any kind anywhere to anyone. My respectful sympathies go to the victims and their families, and my gratitude in memory of U.S. Army Maj. James Henry Carleton for his erection of the original cairn in their memory. I hope we will always remember these people, and never let anything like this ever happen again.

Visited the site two yrs ago. Don,t ask directions from anyone in Cedar City. The small sign in kiosk had been destroyed and a plaque leading to the upper monument defaced, apparently a piaute descendant scratched out piaute as being involved.Even 150 yrs later I admire the folks in Utah that support the monument and acknowledge the worst atrolcity ever on American soil committed by Americans. The 9/11 corollary is intresting. Personally I don,t feel this had anything to do with religion but was a robbery. The 800 livestock, the $4,000.00 in gold and all the supplies were stolen. There had been two years of poor harvest and many of the mormons were facing starvation. They did well following the murders.

First, I am LDS but I am truly sorry about learning of this event not through the Church but by driving by the memorial. I then learned the truth. I have read extensively about the subject. I am planning on leaving flowers at the memorial on Sept. 11th. Thank you for this forum. Please let me know how we can further set aside this sacred ground. I cannot stand that there are property owners that live and thrive on this site. It should be preserved as a reminder of all of those who suffered.

I visitesd the MM site last year and was touched and moved by the sense of tragedy of this heinous crime. That so many people could have their hopes and dreams of life so savagely cut short is unfathomable. While I do not blame Mormons today, it is amazing to me how many still deny church involvement in the event, even on the local level, and still seek to make excuses.

This was a story we grew up as grandchildren hearing about out whole lives... we never doubted the truth as our grandfather, John Reagan Fancher was very well versed in our family history and had several books but when the movie came out it brought about a whole new emotion. They have been to the monument in Arkansas and will travel to Utah from Texas in September to visit the Meadow Mountain. I hope to make the trip myself one day soon.

I saw the movie and it was so devastating, so inhumane. What betrayal. I have heard that the Mormons will not admit to taking any part in this. I do not know if this is true or not, but you sure haven't heard anything about the massacre from them, except to blame it on someone else.

This tragedy really just validated my suspicions about the Mormon church. They ARE a cult and a bad one at that. Not only that, but they are Murderers and liars. Those of us who know the truth about the massacre, weep for those who were murdered in cold blood, while the Mormon cult keeps building itself up and making men in gods. Its very sad. Only the L-rd G-d of Israel knows the men involved and they will be punished for this tragedy in the after life. I will NEVER trust Mormons and they will never set foot in my home. They are a cursed group and religion. May the men women and children murdered rest in peace and their souls find rest in the presence of the L-rd forever.

I send my love to the relatives. First of all the Mountain Meadows Massacre should have NEVER happened! If one piece of the puzzle were removed that would have caused the Mountain Meadows Massacre not to have happened that would have been the cutting off of communications and sending of 1500+ troops on a march towards Utah to put down a nonexistent rebellion. There are lesser pieces of the puzzle if remove would have lessened the effects but not have stopped it. Political power struggles, revenge, greed, mistrust and misunderstandings on the part of both Mormons and Non-Mormons, add to that religious bigotry and racial bigotry on the part of some of those from Missouri. The Mountain Meadows Massacre has its roots in Missouri around Far West and Haun’s Mill in about 1838, it began with the Mormon’s being told that the land of Missouri would be given them by God, this led to the non-Mormon neighbors believing that the Mormons were going to take their land, which led to the creation of mobs which led to more mobs both non-Mormon and Mormon. A Mormon newspaper is destroyed by a mob who claims “self defence” which a judge fine the mob one cent and a peppercorn, an insult to the Mormons. Also that Mormons tended to vote as a block; fearful some in Missouri wanted to deny the Mormons their right to vote plus Mormons were in favor of free blacks joining them in Missouri, which Governor Boggs and many others were against. Which Missouri being a slave state this led to brawls and squirmishes, plus Governor Boggs had desired lands that the Mormons were purchasing. Also Joseph Smith destroyed a printing press after it printed it first newspaper which some truths and some lies mixed with truths, some that Smith did not want printed in the general public. Letters telling of Mormon attacks when in fact the Mormons were attacked first, detailing how Mormons had killed entire troops when in fact most of the troops mentioned wore alive, telling of a rebellion being carried out by the Mormons, pleading to exterminate Mormons to protect their religion led to Governor Boggs issuing the “Extermination Orders.” Which led to a “license to kill” Mormon’s. Beatings, tarred and feathered, tasted of the black snake in which hot tar is applied to the body, homes looted, homes burned to the ground. These which had occurred before, some by both sides were now legal for non-Mormons to do to Mormons. Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs’, Missouri Executive Order Number 44 …The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the state if necessary for the public peace--their outrages are beyond all description. If you can increase your force, you are authorized to do so to any extent you may consider necessary… (Exterminate: to utterly destroy, to drive out.) Driven out of communities that they had built in the dead of winter, many people freezing to death because they were unprepared to leave and unable to defend themselves if they stayed. Colonel Jennings in the Livingston County Militia, Col. Jennings was also Sheriff of Chillicothe. Jennings receives word of the “extermination Orders’ on the 29th, and attacks Haun’s Mill killing 17 Mormons and one non-Mormon on the 30th, with about 200-250 militiamen and finds no cannon. At the end of the attack William Reynolds discovered ten-year-old Sardius Smith hiding under the bellows and blew the top of the child's head off. While women cared for the wounded, the men remained in hiding during the night. The dead were carried on a door and slid into an unfinished well and lightly covered with dirt and straw. A few Missourians returned the next day, took plunder, and warned the remaining Mormons to leave Missouri. Forced to move west they found a place in Mexico were no one else wanted to live, they moved to an area south east of the Great Salt Lake. A short time later this area would become part of the United States. The people living here had their own government which the Federal Government refused to recognize and sent non-Mormons to govern these people many of which were antagonist who met their match and had to leave. One of these, Judge Drummond a polygamist came to Utah to set Mormons straight, a man who left his wife and family in Chicago, Illinois, and arrived in Utah with another woman (politely) who he presents as his wife. Some either left with the money to pay other officials or returned to Washington D.C. with stories some truth mix with lies to create stories of a great rebellion in the Utah Territory, very similar to what happened in Missouri that led to the “Extermination Order”. The Federal Government denying a group of citizens their rights under the First Amendment. The Federal Government attempting to disenfranchise Mormons as Missouri had earlier. Scars of the body or mind rooted in Far West and haun’s mill, the murder of Joseph Smith, and then Parley P. Pratt, the desire of vengeance. With communications cut from Washington D.C. and stories about an army of 2500+ troops being sent under the command of “Squaw Killer” General Harney to squash the rebellion in the Utah territory. Young declares martial law and orders people to stock pile needed supplies needed if war brakes out with the U.S.Army. The Fancher-Baker group found it near impossible to trade for needed supplies. With war mentality taking hold some of those who had the physical or mental scares of Far West and Haun’s Mill meet and the Fancher-Baker train took on the possition of scapegoat or substitute for all the wrongs that the Mormons received over 19+ years; it became a “now or never” time to get some revenge for those in Southern Utah. Thomas Kane tell President Buchanan what was happening, Buchanan sends Kane to Utah with his Apology and a full pardon for all, if Brigham Young accepts Governor Cummings and other federal officials and allows federal troops to make camp near Salt Lake. Young accepts this offer. Thomas Kane proceeds to meet General Johnston who took command of the troops 11 September 1857. Johnston refuses to meet with Kane. Kane decides to proceed back to Salt Lake with Governor Cummins. Young hands over the office of Governor to Cummings. General Johnston travels through the gauntlet near Coalville to Salt Lake wanting to use his cannons on Salt Lake find the town empty except some Mormon Men with torches ready to burn every building if the troops stop. Governor Cummings orders the troops to keep marching and not to stop in Salt Lake and they march to what is now known as Camp Floyd south west of where Lehi is at now. For this and other issues General Johnston comes to dislike Cummings, Cummings becomes liked by the Mormons and hated by the army. With the lies told before and after by people on both sides we will never know the full story of the Mountain Meadows Books to read; Massacre at Mountain Meadows; Mountain Meadows Massacre; Blood of the Prophets and American Massacre the Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857. These are listed in order of accuracy of evidence in trying to tie Brigham Young and the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints to the Crime they deny fact and create conclusions that are flawed. One book alone cannot give all the information needed to paint a near complete picture of what happened. I disagree with Juanita Brooks on her conclusions. Yes sermons did raise tensions; they were not the primary cause. They were no more than some of the reported things that the emigrants said. The primary cause was the cutting off of communications with Utah and sending 1500+ troops. The second cause was the 19+ years of abuse of the members of the Church and Government denying the redress of grievances, even though members carried out attacks in retaliation and reports to Governor Boggs were filled with half truths and omitting the facts that attacks were first carried out against Mormons. Telling the Governor of a Mormon Rebellion. To have “Extermination Orders” or “Executive Order Number 44” signed by Governor Boggs in response to letters of Mormon attacks to “Exterminate” Mormons to protect their religion. Then to take property from the Mormons to pay for a war that the mobs had started. Mountain Meadows Massacre should have never happened, it grew out of mistrust, anger, hate, greed, and revenge, add to the recipe, religious bigotry and racial bigotry. Yes it angered some in Missouri that Mormon were inviting free blacks to join them in Missouri. Yes it angered some in Missouri that Mormons thought that God would give them the land in Missouri. In return for the talk the Government of Missouri took the land and other property from the Mormons. Third cause the Federal Government sent non-Mormons to Utah who came with chips on their shoulders and antagonized the Mormons. Some sent lies mixed with truths to the eastern media and to Washington D.C. Which President James Buchanan made a decision to cut communications and send 1500+ troops to put down a fictious rebellion in Utah, with out carrying out an investigation into the facts? Which he later he sends an apology with a full pardon for all prior crimes in the Utah Territory connected to the Utah War in 1858 If Brigham Young accepts Governor Cummins and other Federal appointees and allows the Army into Utah. Forth the murders of Joseph Smith and Parley P. Pratt, who stood trail for those crimes. Did procicuters go after them like they did after John D. Lee. Did they go after William Reynolds who shot the ten year old Sardus Smith at Haun’s Mill. Similar things happened in Missouri Illinois and Arkansas, none charged or acquitted as in John D. Lee’s first trial.

I am the fifth great granddaughter of Elenor Ann Fancher.I learned of this family history at age thirty. In my late thirties while traveling to Las Vegas I saw the memorial site on our road map.We detoured over the very snowey road and hiked in the moonlight to the monument site.I asked my partner to give me a minute alone.I scattered some tobacco to the four directions and prayed to the spirits of those dear departed. As I stood ,a nightbird began singing.I felt my prayer had been heard.I can be contacted at 228 Commercial St.#294;Nevada City Ca.95959

I am from Warren, Arkansas and saw the movie "September Dawn" last night...My heart is broken knowing this happened to my Arkansan's...The LDS church not only authorized the slaughter of these people and as far as I know, still denies it was responsible...This coming Sept 11, 2010, I will remember the poor souls who were murdered that day by making a comment on my wall on Facebook as well as saying a prayer...One day I will visit the site where they left Arkansas and then I will visit the site where they were killed....Thank you for this web site...

Are there any books written about the survivors lives after the attack or specifically by one of the children themselves? Also, I have read of other attacks by "Painted Indians" around the same time in the broader region thought to be associated with the momrmons themselves, Do you have any information about that or recomend particular books about that or the mountain meadows? I would like to read a few objective veiws from neither mormon nor emigrant one sidedness. Thank You, Jessicas Fisher

In researching my ancestors, I found my Great-great-great Grandfather, Frances Marion Poteet was a park of the wagon train. Legend has it he was forewarned of the attack by a Mormon man whose life he had saved and took his immediate family and left the wagon train to travel around Mountain Meadows. According to family, there were relatives lost in the massacre. I have yet to verify or find anymore information regarding the story.

I am so ashamed of those members of our Church doing that so long ago. I read that Brigham Young sent a letter stating allowance of all emigrants to pass through there unmolested. I believe that. I believe it did arrive two days too late. I'm amazed that the surviving children were permitted to stay with Mormon families after that. There must have been some concurrence that not all members of the Church were that vicious. I hope that is the consensus today too. I extend my deepest condolences to the descendants of those victims of the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre.

I am happy that healing is taking place between the living relatives of the Baker-Fancher party people and those in the LDS Church whose ancestors were involved in the massacre. Accurate history affirms that neither Brigham Young, my great-great-grandfather George A. Smith nor any other general LDS Church leader was involved in any way in the planning and/or instigation of the massacre. I hope all today reject promoting such a despicable and unhistorical accusation. We should rather remember and regret the tragedy but cultivate a spirit of forgiveness and love for those who ancestors were involved on both sides. Phillip C. Smith, Ph.D.

I had never heard of the massacre until I moved to Utah, even though I was raised in Mo. I can not imagine calling a group such as mormon's, God's people. They built their religion on Blood! From beginning till?????? These people that the mormons murdered in Mountain Meadows were also left in the fields for 2 years. Stripped of their clothing, which was taken from the dead AFTER being killed. The clothing, as well as other personal property, was taken and spread throughout the mormons. The mormons have a thrill for the spill of blood (at least at that time) It was even mentioned in their blood oaths, that they use to say in their temple rituals. All I have to say now is.....IF YOU ARE MORMON, GET OUT OF IT NOW!!!!!! MORMONS ARE THE FOLLOWERS OF SATAN. The sad thing about it is, most don't even realize they are following Satan.

I have been doing family research for some years and have ancestors from the Carroll County, Johnson County, Arkansas area. My GGG-Grandmother's maiden name was Miller. In doing my research, I have come across some of these names, but have not yet been able to make a direct connection to the Miller's in the wagon train. While in Carroll County, Arkansas a few summers ago I learned of the Mountain Meadows Massacre and have been very interested in knowing what happened. Thank you for sharing all of the information that is posted on this site.

The Massacre should have never happened. A series of events came together and a group of men crossed the line and did something that if they had thought about the whole picture they would not have carried out the crime. It was born out of anger, fear, greed in a state of war. They after it was over many realized what they did was wrong. I am thankful for the many Historians such as Jaunita Brooks, Will Bagley, Sally Denton and others. I agree with many of their conclussions and disagree with some of their conclussions. My love to the Families on both sides. I pray for those who's lives were taken, and those who survived.

First off I would like to say this is a great site. I found out about the massacre after getting a family history book. It is amazing that I grew up never knowing about this. My relatives chose not to come out west at that time. It is hard not to be bitter but I try. Lets just keep the truth in the light. Sadly some things will never be known for sure.

I thought I knew a bit about the history of the west. Boy, was I wrong. I just learned of this incident and have attemted to learn more. What source would you suggest as the "final word"? I think the work you are doing is very important. Keep up the good work.

I live in N. Utah. It is so troubling to me to see the locals dismiss this as an aberation or excuse it as a response to previous provovacation. I will be taking my two boys, 8 and 11 this weekend to visit it and explain how mind control can cause good people to do terrible things.

We still track down Nazis today and send them to trial. Polansky has finally been tracked down, though Hollywood is making all kinds of excuses for justifying the drugging and rape of a 13 year old. I listened to a Morman speaker on a documentary state that "The books are closed, its time to forgive and forget." Forgive who and forget what? Those that confessed and John D. Lee? I expect most people have forgiven these men, if not forgetting them. Its a healthy thing to do, to forgive; we are instructed by God to forgive. We become bitter and hateful people if we don't forgive. But God doesn't ask us to be stupid. The Turkish government refuses to acknowledge the Aremnian genocide. Hitler used this fact to help justify his genocidial acts with the statement "Who remembers the Armenians?" Even today, acts of violence are tolerated against those that dare to raise public attention to this matter in Turkey. Institutionalized coverups are a bad thing - only enabling continued wrongs to be committed. Was Brigham Young involved? Don't know. Were other leaders involved? Don't know. Its not time to close the books, its time to open them. If revealing the truth causes the distruction of the Morman chuch, then it was only based on Brigham Yound, not God. If the church is based on God, revealing the truth should not be feared. What are we forgiving if we don't know the truth?

This was such a terrible thing to have happen. I can't imagine what these people went through during that time. And how could any person hurt so many people, men, women, and children and be perfectly fine with this. I mean these mormans must have been really sick or completely unstable in their minds to honestly believe that any god from any religion would agree that this was ok. This is truely a sad event in history.

This was indeed a sad chapter in the history of our country. Though we would like to claim it was a result of fear and misunderstanding, it remains just what it was, a Massacre. Prayers for the lifes and familys of those lost and for those who perpetrated this atrocity. The truth of the actions may never be known, but, the truth of the act is known!!!

may they rest in peace.... whenever i hear something like this still lingering in the hearts & minds of man (& there are many) it reminds me of a quote i by someone from many years ago that read: "mans inhumanity to man will cause countless to mourn" and i guess events such as these will remain in the hearts & minds of man for as long as man feels a need to decimate those with whom he/she shares the gift of life? i heard it said not so long ago that for light years there is no one like us around, so isn't it prudent that we begin to learn to live with each other? for myself, i can see no harm in understanding that that beginning begins with me & it begins now.

I learned about this while reading "Massacre at Mountain Meadows" by Walker, Turley and Leonard. I saw the name Jesse Dunlap from Marion Co, Arkansas. Much of my direct ancestors were from that area of Arkansas and the name Dunlap was familiar. My great great great uncle married Bessie Dunlap. Her great uncles were Jesse and Lorenzo Dunlap were her great uncles. Three of the surviving Dunlap children were raised by her grandfather. I had no idea until a few weeks ago there was a connection to my family.

This site is a lovely tribute to those who were murdered. Two of the men, Solomon and William Wood were the grandsons of Judge William Wood of Marion County, their father being George W. Wood. My family line descends from Obediah, a younger son of the judge. Charles Stallcup was married to Winnie, one of the judge's daughters. Thank you.

The recent tv airing on History Channel wss the best so far when it comes to accuracy. My father in law was Joseph Johnson Fancher and a direct decendent of those Fanchers who lost their lives. He hosted an annual Fancher Reunion at his home/farm in Osage, Arkansas beginning in 1947 until his death in 1967. The LDS's always sent an emissary to the event.

The hearts and minds of these killers is eerily similar to the terrorists on the same 9/11, only 144 years later. Some things never change when it comes to religion - "I'm right, you're wrong, therefore I must kill you". Atheism cures religious terrorism. My thoughts go to the victims, not the murderers.

Acording to my grandfather we had relatives that tried to come west on the Francher Wagon train. I am seraching now for the connection as I don't know it and don't know if he ever mentioned it. My Uncle are planning a trip next spring to Mountian Meadows and then on to Arkansas to reconstruct as much of our family his as we can locate. I recently became interested in this event as the result of a history project in College. As I did the research I became more and more enthralled and then when I found out we might actually have relatives that were on the wagon trail as well as the possibility of having relatives that were responsible for the massacre I became very interested.

I have been interested in the massacre for many years. The cover-ups have been, and still are, unconscionable. As an amateur historian, and former history teacher who always strove to truly educate beyond the pablum of the textbooks, I feel we all owe a debt of gratitude to those who have sought, and exposed, the truth. Thank YOU!!!

It was two days ago as I was researching my second, third and fourth Wharton ancestors that I found the evidence of their murders at the Mountain Meadows Massacre. . . two Wharton sisters, Nancy Jane and Mary M, married two Dunlap brothers. You know the rest of the story. I appreciate the attention to detail that the MMM Association has paid in documenting this horrible event. I am still processing my feelings about this incident, particularly in light of the work of the LDS church in genealogy at its familysearch.org website. Little known to thousands of people is the fact that the simple act of uploading a GEDCOM file to that site gets your ancestors baptized as Mormons. I sincerely hope that the church has had better sense than to do that with men, women and children from the great state of Arkansas that were slaughtered on September 11, 1857. Perhaps at some point in the future, when the sickening feelings of horror have faded, I will feel differently. Right now, that is more than I can do.

I feel an understanding for decendents of both victims and perpetrators of this crime. I am however, after over five years of my being aware of this event, frustrated that the Morman Church has not accepted accountability for its official involvement in this crime. I am unfamiliar with the law--and therefore also fail to understand why the United States government has failed to exert its power to make all of the American people aware of the real truth in this matter. I also feel that this monument should not be in the hands of the Mormons themselves, and that the property of the gravesite and memorial should be owned and cared for by the United States government. Call me unrealistic--but that's exactly how I feel. I am honored to have learned about this subject in depth and see it as gaining an understanding about the current world we live in and that this is necessary to elevate our own personal consciousness to understand the problems of all humanity. It is so connected to the mind of any and all terrorism.

The more I learn, the sicker it makes me. I was a Mormon most of my life and heard people defend the Massacre. It is unbelievable and I truely believe it was carried out on orders from Brigham Young. His own words and actions convict this monster.

I have just learned about this event as I was digging for my family heritage. I am related directly to Charity Ann Porter through my father's grandmother Mamie Bertha Porter. I have also noticed that Charity, her husband Edward Coker, and their 2 children were not listed as victims (which I know for sure they were)It is rather odd that Charity died by the hand of Indians and white men along with her brother Pendelton Porter, who died with his entire family in a non related event. It is disgusting to hear what the Mormon religion will say to cover their butts!!! Thankyou for keeping their memory alive!

I attended the program on Mountain Meadows in the Fall of 08 in Harrison AR. As a teacher I received a packet of info to be used in teaching the children about this 'first 911.' 3 of my students wanted to enter the essay contest. At this time the students are writing their ideas about the children of the wagon train - what children of that day did - games, chores, how they dressed, travel on the train, family life, etc.

My ggggrandfather Zealy Moss Wynn witnessed the attack on Perley Pratt in front of his blacksmith shop in Alma AR. He fled for his life when it was reported that the Mormons were in his area and looking for anybody connected to Pratts Death. It was assumed that Zealy would catch up to the wagon train that had left Crawford Co AR two weeks before and would join his son already in California .......He was never heard of again...

I am a History major, but had never heard of the MMM until seeing Ken Burns THE WEST several years ago. That two horrific religion-inspired terrorist murders both occurred on Sept. 11 is so ironic. It underscores the degree of evil that can be done by people who believe they are acting out God's will--whatever that might be. May the fates always protect us from such men.

I hope that this site is not sponsored or created by the LDS Church. This tragedy should never be forgotten and I think more needs to be done to expose the truth of the Mormon involvement. It is such a shame that all of those who were responsible either directly or indirectly were never punished. I have heard so many bizarre, cock and bull stories by members of the LDS Church justifying this massacre of unarmed and innocent children, women and men.

This was a horrible insult to humanity and religion. This is the type of twisted self righteous religious fanaticism that we see today in 911 and countless other atrocities throughout history WWII and the Holocaust. Yet no one comes forward to take responsibility for the crime especially the church, if you can call it that, of the Mormon faith. Yet it is our fault that we have not made them bear responsibility, they offer some veiled attempt at an apology without accepting blame and we accept that. We as a nation should demand accountability for those who were so brutally butchered and what happens instead? they name a university after the church leader, brilliant!

I am not related, but very good friends with a Tackitt. I would like to know how I could get a question to Will Bagley. I have read many books on the event. The one I found most interesting, and the one I found to be based on facts, was the Blood of the Prophets by Will Bagley. I am currently reading Massaacre at Mt. Meadows by 3 LDS "Historians". I am finding they are back to shifting much of the blame back on to the emigrants. Any comments on this book from your organization? From Will Bagley? Thanks, Lincoln Powers

I grew up in Caliente, Nevada very near the site. I didn't hear much about the massacre except from my mom. I was last at the site prior to 1979 and there wasn't much to see. I read Sally Denton's book and thought it was well done. Of course I may be prejudiced by the fact that Sally's grandmother was my 4th grade teacher (and a great influence on me) and her grandfather was a longtime family friend and gifted lawman (not crook-catcher/detective gifted as I recall but a peace-keeper without peer).

The kiosk was mostly torn down and the visitor book was long gone. The monuments are well cared for . A sadness persist here . The site chosen in Canada to make the movie bears a reasonable resemblance Though out of the way the drive is very worthwhile ,

My recent trips through Utah have generated an avid interest in their history. I'm 64 and an amature historian of the west. I'm a non-Mormon and a life-long resident of Arizona. I've been to Lee's Ferry many times and have read about John Doyle Lee's life from Navoo Illinois westward with Brigham Young and the subsequent event at Mountain Meadows. A true American tragady. Mr. Lee was executed 20 years after the fact. He was the only one held responsible.

I've visited the massacre site a few times now, on my way to my property in the Hamblin Valley, and am always moved. I noticed some dead links on the photo page here. I'm also wondering if the MM Association is involved in the work being done by the NPS and BLM on the Old Spanish National Historic Trail. I didn't see any reference to the MMA on the websites for this project, and there's certainly an important link here. I'm interested in anything I might do to help.

The Tanners started my interest in the Mountain Meadows Massacre and then the work of Juanita Brooks broadened the scope. Since that time I have collected a number of the books on the subject. I have been trying to find out who Basil G. Parker was writing about on the Mormon side. In his book "Life and Adventures of Basil G. Parker" he says that he had outlived a person he had sworn to keep secret certain details about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Do you know who he is talking about? Thanks for any information.

You all have done a wonderful job and such cruelty, paranoia and cover up should never be forgotten. It's a shame that Brigham Young escaped the crime and placed blame on others. This shows the coward he really was and not a great leader. Thanks for the site. Well done. Gary D. Schott, Green Valley, AZ

I am 53 years old and only recently heard of this awful tragedy. And, the silly thing is, I found out about it through the movie depiction, September Dawn. I am a western movie fan and am always looking for westerns I have not seen. I chose this one for that very reason, not realizing the significance of it, and now the profound impact the story has stirred in me. I honestly don't know what to say. Tragedies of this magnitude occur(ed) seemingly without guilt or conscience.

It is so hard to believe that this horrible thing happened and I never heard about it until I moved to Arkansas from Texas in 1991! I never heard anything about it and I have always been a history buff. My prayers are with all the decendents. I think I probably know some of the decendents. Linda Bailey Alpena, AR

I just watched September Dawn and what a shame. I was born into the Mormon church - grandparents coming from Payson to Raymond Alberta. I am not a practising church member and after seeing the movie no longer want to be associated with the religion. It makes me ashamed that I could possibly be related to those murderers.

On Wednesday, September 15, 1999 my wife and I left Cedar City for the Mountain Meadows Massacre Site. I had encountered the subject of the Massacre in something I was researching and found this web-site devoted to the Massacre. Here, I had thought, was a piece of history in the making, and an unusual and important type of history. In 1857 a wagon train of about 120 pioneers left Arkansas for California following on the old Spanish Trail, led by Alexander Fancher and John Baker. They passed through Salt Lake and proceeded south to Mountain Meadows where they camped. The Mormons had a lot of anxiety and antagonism from their experiences in New York, Ohio, Illinois, other places, and contemporary actions of the federal government. The Ute Indians had their own grievances. It may be that the Utes, Mormons disguised as Indians, or a combination attacked the pioneers. Hostilities went on for about a week. On September 11, 1857, the Mormon militia negotiated a truce and arranged for the pioneers to leave their wagon train and march back to Cedar City. While on route the Utes and Mormons, led by John D. Lee, ambushed the pioneers and massacred all but about 17 small children. John Lee was later executed for his role in the massacre—the only one so treated. One hundred and forty-two years later on September 11, 1999 the families and friends of those involved and those who died met together. They, the offspring of John Lee, Alexander Fancher, John Baker and many others from both sides, participated together in dedicating a new monument to those who had died in this, the second largest massacre of European-Americans to occur during the settling of the American West. Custer’s Last Stand was the largest. Also in attendance was the President of the Mormon Church, Gordon Hinckley, who had been very instrumental in having the monument rebuilt and rededicated. President Hinckley said that he first learned of the Massacre at Mountain Meadows in 1947, when his father took him to the site and told him the story. Ever since he felt a deep compassion for those who died at the location. President Hinckley said, “…we express our regrets over what happened…We need to eliminate the hatred…but don’t wait. I am an old man, 88 years old, and I want to be around to see this project completed.” We arrived four days after the dedication. The flowers were still present. We talked to a few people who were visiting the monuments, including a great grandson of someone who had been on the wagon train. It seemed to us that the significance of this event lay, not in the massacre, but rather in two other elements: the long time these wounds stayed open. After 142 years, people still speak of hate. And the reconciliation; Richard O. Lee wrote, “my great great grandfather participated in this massacre…I worried that when people found that I was descendant of John D. Lee that they would hold bitter feelings for me…Here I was during that dedication a descendant of one who participated in the massacre, sitting next to a descendant of one who was massacred!…We talked at length…I was brought to tears over and over again as the program proceeded…The only way this event could have been better would be to have everyone in the world feel and understand the power of love and forgiveness that I felt that day.” Kristie Fancher wrote: “It touched my heart deeply…What a healing experience it was for all who attended. I realized that fear can make good people do terrible things to each other…this experience has made me a better person.” Nancy and I felt lucky to have seen the afterglow of this dedication. May the monument be a guide to reconcilation throughout the world.

I'm a former member of the LDS (Mormon) church. When you first join the Mormon church, noone tells you about these things. When I learned about Joseph Smith "marrying" little girls and other men's wives and about the MMM, I didn't walk out, I RUN out. I'm SO ashamed having ever belonged to such a crazy Cult! People should demand from their Government that this event will be included in future printings of American history and taught in history classes. I already wrote letters to my reps. God bless you all! Gracie

The massacre was a deplorable and needless tragedy. However, for the Mormons to attempt to lay blame on the Piute Indians was ever more shameful. For a more complete reading that includes the archeological survey results, refer to "To Feed a Tree in Zion: Osteological Analysis of the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre.

This event was first spoken of by my father when I was a child. The book, The Fancher Train, was in our Glasgow, Ky. library and is based on this event. We were told that this was a part of our family history. It is a sad an deplorable event, but only one of many, that was part of our country's history. Many of our ancestors endured so much to open up this country for us, and whether they became well-known or died in anonimity, I am proud of them all and grateful for their sacrifices.

Many years ago, I read a book titled: John Doyle Lee - Zealot, Pioneer Builder, Scapegoat - by Juanita Brooks. Mrs Brooks characterized the Fancher Party as (for it's day) well financed and equiped for their trip to California. An amount of cash money was mentioned as being in possesion of this traveling group, five thousand dollars as I recall. My question is: Was this money ever accounted for - was restitution ever paid? The Mormons have "almost" admitted to the murders and I'd like to know if they have admitted to being theives. Of course, all of the people who participated are long dead. The Mormon Church knows the desposition of the cash and should own up to it.

My wife & I have been to Utah 5 times, learning about and becoming friends with family members of Butch Cassidy. This experience has led me to the sad event of 1857, at Mountain Meadows. I simply don't know the words that will say how bad this event was. I now have read quite a number of books on the subject and have numerous more on order. I guess what causes the greatest sadness for me are two things. To believe that a man who had the power and control over all his followers as this man did, and then be presented as not knowing of,or planning what happened, is very, very hard to buy. I of course speak of Mr. Brigham Young. Then to deny, cover up, even to this day, the participation and leadership of the LDS Church in what happened, defies common sense. I have a copy of a letter written by the little girl who had a bullet take off part of her ear. She was on her dad's lap, the bullet struck her father in the chest. Of course, he was killed. We hope to return to Utah in 09. If this happens, we will do what I wished we had of done during prior trips. We will go about 30 some odd miles s/w of Cedar City. I want to walk where they walked. What a shame. Thank you.

It was a sad day in the history of our country and one that the LDS church should stand up and take responsibility for. Our thoughts and prayers go out to both sides on this terrible tragedy. As long as there are questions it well never go away!

The story of the massacre was passed down to me by family years ago. A great great (?) aunt was married to one of the militia men who participated in the massacre. The men were sworn to secrecy, even from their wives. On discovering the awful truth, she left her husband and later died of "mysterious causes". We were taught never to speak of it outside the family. To this day, the family related to her are no part of the Mormon church. To this day, my father is afraid to speak of the massacre openly.

I've just seen the movie September Dawn and was unbelievably moved. I've never heard of this event and was saddened to find out that the Mormon church was directly responsible. I've always pictured them as a peaceful, family oriented sect. I guess it's hard to know the basis or originations of a group unless you study up on them. My heart goes out to all the families that lost relatives. God bless them all for just wanting to begin a new life and have it cut down because of something like fanaticism and prejudice.

I'm not sure if I am related to any of the Fanchers killed but would like to find out. My grandfathers name was Cary Fancher. I have no other information except he lived in Cincinnati Ohio until his death. He died long before I was born. My father was only an infant when his father died from complications from a factory accident. He was survived by five children Richard, Stella, Thelma, William and Louis, ( my father). If you can find out any information from this I would greatly appreciate it or contact my e-mail if you have any questions for me. Thank you, Kim S. Fancher

I came to this sight after watching "September Dawn". It chilled me to think of the families that were killed at the massacre and also the orphans left with the memories. I am very thankful that the event has not been completely swept under the rug and there are those that are fighting to protect the memories of those lost. God bless you in your efforts.

Such an outrageous tragedy! The triune God, Who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, will one day set the record straight--to be sure. Meanwhile, continue to pressure the Mormons to tell THE TRUTH about how Brigham Young was intimately involved. May God richly bless you all as you hold out for verity!

My husband, Charles, and I want you to know how outraged and saddened we are over this horrific tragedy. We learned about this tragedy through the pbs special on the Mormon Church. We both were stunned that 9/11/2001 was not the first "9/11" tragedy in our nation's history; and that in Mountain Meadows a group of religious fanatics murdered Americans. Know that we are wrapping all association members in our love and prayers and support.

My grandmother was a Turbyville born in Strawberry, Arkansas, Nancy Turbyville was married to James DeShazo, their son, Allen DeShazo was killed in the Mountain Meadow Massacre. I live in Cedar City, UT although I had no previous knowledge of these events. I visited the site of the memorial and have done a lot of reading since learning of the tragedy of that day. I cannot say that I will ever understand the events that so sadly took these lives. I also feel that a cross should be allowed to be placed at the same place of the memorial, for the simple fact that many of these families were Christian, not Mormon.

Is there any interest or effort in further forensic study of the massacre site and the bones unearthed there? With a change in president, is there any possibility the Mormons will cease to oppose study of the site and, ultimately, creating a national park or forest there?

Maybe not here on earth but our Heavenly Father will punish all who were involved in this horible tradegy. Things like that should never have happened. God rest their souls.

I am embarassed to say I knew nothing about this massacre until I watched the recent movie, September Dawn. This got me reading up on this tragedy. I must say this must be the most under-written about historical event. I am appalled that the Mormon church itself has never been held accountable, that there was never really a public outcry, and that I have not been able to find anything on the internet to show that the Mormon church has ever shown regret. It now makes me sick to think of their commercials, and the next Mormon that comes to my door to tell me that my church (United) will not save me from hell (true story), is going to get an earful. Brigham Young has a respected school named for him! I truly feel for all descendants of the victims in this massacre...may God bless you all.

I am a former member of the LDS church. I left the church because I started investigating some questions addressed in Fawn Brodie's book "No Man Knows My History." My list of questions and concerns started growing and growing...my faith was destroyed. It was very painful. And, unfortunately, the Mountain Meadows Massacre was part of that search for discovery. I am very sorry. I agree that the land should be turned over to the federal government. And, I am ashamed that the church does not assume responsibility nor give the martyrs their rightful burials in honor. What a disgrace.

My husband and I reside in Washington State. We own five properties in the St George, Ut area. Until we watched the movie "September Dawn" last week-end, we had no idea that this had happened. We are not Mormon, but have always left that to itself. However, I do believe the Mountain Meadows Massacre has left a blight on the Mormon Church that needs to be rectified. We love The area, St George, and will never change our mind, but we do feel deeply that this needs to be rectified. Can't wait to get back there on Feb 12th, 2008.

I just recently read about this historic massacre in the epic book written by Hampton Miles highlighting the life and times of Kit Carson. I was stunned to learn how this incident unfolded, expecially since there does not appear to have been any provocation shown by the Arkansas settlers who were simply moving through the area.

My grandma said that her grandpa tom Farmer did infact go with the baker and fancher train to california with alf smith and a calmus campbell ( I think that's his name I would have to look it up) . Grandma said that the wagon train was going too slow for them and they got impatient and went the northern route when they hit Utah. They did not learn of the massacure until several months later when they came back to arkansas by boat to lousiana.Grandma also said that one of her aunts who's last name was Smith had gone to california with a wagon train and the family never heard of them again? But no one knows for sure if they went on the baker/fancer wagon train or another one.

Saw the movie last night and was very moved. I cannot explain why certain people listen to men about religion or other matters and believe that these men or women actually know what there talking about. I live in Waco,Tx. I was here when the Branch Davidian Compound incident happened. It is a great tragedy to see all those people follow an idiot to there grave. My heart goes out to the victims families, on both sides of this tragedy.

In my gr-gr-grandfathers, officialy published, biography it says he had a son Stephen Ball who left for the west before 1850. He was supposedly killed in the mid 1850 by the Mormons when he was going further west with a wagon train. I do not find his name on the lists but maybe there was more than one wagon train attack.

My grandfather was John Young Nelson. He wrote a book called "Fifty Years on the Trail" where he discribed some of the details about the massacre. His "claims" have been denied by the mormon church. My brother is a mormon & even he denies grandpa Nelsons' story. I lived with Grandma Rose Nelson Ecoffey, daughtor of John Young Nelson, while I attended boarding school in Pine Ridge, SD. I respect the memory of my ancestors & I feel there must some grain of truth in the retelling.

I think the Mormon Church should admit that they massacred inecent people. This almost sounds like an 18th century Hitler. In the movie I see Bringham Young as the leader of this Cult(and it was a cult or for sure was then) who always stayed out of harms way and made sure he was not to blame.

I was speechless after watching it and now it's Monday afternoon and I still have a lump in my throat especially after going on-line and doing research on this terribly, sickening sad day. I wish I could do something for any survivors' families. But I do believe THE WORD NEEDS TO GET OUT TO EVERYONE. My children never studied this in school. And I was never exposed to it either. To me, this is the United States' Holocaust and the Mormom church should be held accountable - even today - in the year 2008. Debby

My family roots run deep in Arkansas and until 1/12/2008 i was not aware of this event. I'm saddened at the fact that LDS will not own up to this tragedy and help the healing begin. This is a subject that needs to be brought out of the darkness and into the light of day. The current state of the world we need to look at all extermist and understand that they do not just come out of the middle east, that we in America have had some home grown along time before 911.

My husband and I rented the DVD SEPTEMBER DAWN and watched it earlier tonight. I did not know of this heinous event in American history until seeing this film. We were both horrified and sickened. I have been reading about the Mountain Meadows Massacre all night since watching the film. At the end of the film credits it was stated that the MORMONS continue to deny their religion's involvement which is apparently untrue according to your site. I am amazed that there could possibly be any tributes to Brigham Young in the state of Utah or anywhere in this country since he was so obviously involved. Our hearts weep for the victims regaardless of how long ago this barbaric, fanaticism event took place.

Even the NAZI's were held accountable. I am a german/hungarian american (catholic) and I had family that killed eachother in WWII....I hold some of that guilt ...what about the mormons??Accountability...??? Just acknowldgment would ease minds and hearts! My 14 year old son and I watched "September Dawn" and even he found the paradox of history disturbing. Prayers go out to those who live with this as part of thier personal history!

I just watched the movie September Dawn.I am appauled at what the Mormons did. I live in Calgary Alberta and know some Mormons and they are nothing like the Mormons protrayed in the movie. They are kind and loving people and would not hurt anyone. I think that some of the Mormons and also like any Religion that can get out of hand the people of that Religion can become easily brainwashed. Those people in that wagon train where not going to hurt anyone, all they wanted to do is pass through to California. I think that the Mormon Church better step up to the plate and admit that they massacred inecent people. This almost sounds like an 18th century Hitler. In the movie I see Bringham Young as the leader of this (Cult) if you want to call it that who always stayed out of harms way and made sure he was not to blame. At the end of the show Lee was put to death by Fireing Squad,as far as I was concerned Brigham Young should have been by his side because he was the instagater of the whole massacre. Also I think that Bringham Young was crazy to have so many wives. That's nuts. There is one thing I don't understand about this,is if the Mormons were such God Fearing people did they not beleive in the Ten Commandments?Espeically Thou shall not kill and back to the many wives what about Thou shall not commit adultery?I beleive they disobeyed all the commandments. But then when we all die God will judge us and hopefully he judged Bringham Young and the rest of the Clan or (Cult)accordingly. Thank You Patricia Norris.

This is heartbreaking. My husband and I just watched the movie "September Dawn". Neither of us had ever heard of this event and that is a sad thing. I am recommending this movie to friends and family, along with visiting this web site. I am not Mormon. My daughter has some friends at school who are and I disagree with some of what they have told my daughter, such as telling her that she will not go to Heaven because she is not Mormon. It is a tough thing to explain to your child when they come home questioning if they will go to Heaven or not because of not being Mormon. It saddens me to see that many Mormons must still to this day believe they are the only "chosen" people of God. I am so very sorry this massacre happened and I hope that more people can become aware of what has apparently been covered up by the LDS church for a long time. Thank you again for providing us with this knowledge. Many blessings, Annette

I feel that until the Morman people admit that what was done was no better than Hitler and that their beloved leader is no better than Hitler will that church or the souls of the people following that faith ever be truly in line with GOD. Or any other faith that practices any such horrors in the name or our creator!

I have visited the Mountain Meadow Massacre site. I initially learned about it reading Under The Banner by Jon Kraukaur. The incident is extremely intriguing and yet very sad. I wouldn't hold anything against the Mormon Church. If I were Mormon I don't know if I would want to advertise this tragedy. I think it is wonderful that this memorial site has been built. Next time I am in Utah I will definitely visit again. This is a great, but sad lesson in History. Let's not repeat it. We are a great country, built on much diversity and are in trying times. Please remember your own individual integrity. In each of us we DO know what is good and honorable.

The more I learn about early Mormonisn and the violent history of its early leaders, the more I want it to disappear from america. The crap that these people believe in at face value makes them brethern of the Neanderthal. They are sheep wandering the lands and cities of America whipped about by money and sex in Salt Lake city, spreading a yarn that would make an aborigine laugh. Womanizers, money diggers, the "I am holier than thou" bullshit because I am a prophet who speaks directly with God." These freaks were run out of New York, Illinois, and Missouri, and they should keep running until they hit Antarctica. See if their angel Moroni and main man Morman can find a niche for them there. Might piss off the Penguins, though! Babylloyd

We are from Arkansas and just happened onto the Mountain Meadow Massacre sight while sightseeing, 10-18-07. As a history buff, of course I had to see what was there. We were shocked to see the Arkansas flag flying and completely surprised by the facts. We live less than one hundred miles from Harrison and had never heard of this. It was very touching to know that after all these years they and their families are not forgotten. We will definitely be looking for the memorial at Harison next time we are there.

It is hard to put into words my shame of what happened to all who lost their lives at the Mountain Meadows Massacre. I am not a descendant of any of the families, but have been working on our family history for many years. I am presently reading September Dawn, and purchased Sally Denton's book also. We've toured Southern Utah, visited Bryce & Zion, but were never able to visit the site at Mountain Meadows. I hope to some day, and also help to keep this tragic story alive for future generations to realize how hatred can cause so much grief for all.

Visited site last summer. Sad that LDS has their dirty revisionist fingers in most sites that come up in googling. According to what I heard, this was the walthiest wagon train ever headed West and the promary reason for Massacre was money, pure and simple. Sa the movie, sad disappointment. Also haven't heard how the LDS conspired to break up origianal train into two parties (more manageable size) and manipulate to Mountain Meadows. Yes ,children wre returned, Lee became martyr for church, but, was any of the money returned. Also thought it was ultimate chutxpah for lds to submit a bill to government for board and care of the orphans.

If you have any information about this D. Hudson, I would be very interested in what you can tell me. Thank You, Michelle M. Wells (Hudson)

Greetings, I attended the Saturday Morning Service at the meadows Sept. 8, 2007 and the Dinner at the Dixie Center that night. I am a due's paying member of the association for many years now and attended the Dedication of the Seige Site/Grave Site in 1999. I just want to say thanks to all those who planned and in any way contributed to putting on these events. My experience at the memorial service last Saturday was moving to say the least. The minister from the Shepard of the Hills Methodist Church gave such a wonderful sermon on the need to seek peace and healing, and to truly learn to Love one another, it moved me to tears. A truly universal message for us all. I am sure that I was not alone in how I felt that morning. I am so proud of the members of the association on both sides of this tragedy for their desire to come together in the spirit of brotherly Love and seek to bring peace and healing to all. I meet and had a chance to speak to a man who's last name is Dunlap who's ancesters/relatives are numbered in the mid teen's among the list of victims of this horrible tragedy. Even though there is not a man or woman who had anything to do with this event alive today including the two of us, I expressed my heart felt sympathy for his family's loss at Mt. Meadows. And with tears in his eye's he expessed his sympathy to me and my family for the loss of life of our ancester at Mt. Meadows as well as the only person who paid with his life for his part in this tragedy. We wept together as we realized that the events at this tragic location had caused both of us pain through the years. I was amazed at his acknowledgement even with his own sense of loss. It brought me hope that at least between he and I the bitterness had come to an end. I wish that the world could likewise turn from bitterness and retribution to Love and Forgiveness. This is only way we can learn to live in peace and harmony. I am greatful for the MMA for it's stated mission of bringing peace and healing to tragic event. That we can all learn that the opposite attitude, that of Mistrust and Hatred which is the root cause of this tragedy 150 years ago. Thanks you to the board members of the MMA for your selfless service to us all!!! Richard O. Lee

I moved two years ago to St. George from Blytheville, Arkansas. I had never heard about the MMM until I watched the PBS special, "The Mormons". I feel a lot of anger about this horrifying event of 150 years ago. I went to the Memorial today (9/08/07)trying to understand this unforgiveable event. No, I don't understand.

You have the date of the Massacre as September 11th. The correct date is September 7th. I have actual, original documents from a relative who participated in the murders & he clearly states that the murders occured on September 7th. I've also seen numerous original documents hand-written by several of the other Mormon men who participated in the murders & they ALL state that the date was the 7th. I'm not certain how you came up with the date of the 11th but it needs to be corrected. The history of this terrible action by the Mormon Church has been lied about enough.

Addendum to my first e-mail. It's pretty sobering to realize that had I lived in Utah during the same time and under the same circumstances as my ancestors did, I could as easily have been guilty of the same evils done that contributed to the murders at Mountain Meadows. May God truly take away all pride and give us hearts of love and forgiveness.

I first heard of the Mountain Meadows Massacre (MMM) a number of years ago while reading through a History and Genealogy of my family in a publication given to my grandmother in 1960. My grandmother, raised in Utah, was a granddaughter of Mormon Apostle Parley Parker Pratt, Contained in the family history given to her was an account of the death of a family member, a farmer, living in Utah in the time directly preceding the MMM. It stated, in part, about the death of the farmer/family member, “He skinned an animal that was poisoned by Missouri and Arkansas immigrants, who had gone through poisoning water and other degradations, and who was finally stopped by the Mt. Meadows Massacre.” This sparked my interest. Interesting reading on the SAINTS ALIVE website (saintsalive.com) in their Library, the Mormon Resource file, #19 Wife, The Story of a Life in Bondage to Mormonism by Brigham Young's apostate wife, Ann Eliza. Chapter 23 contains the authors thoughts and recollections about the MMM, In the same chapter she shares was she believed about the killing of my ancestor, Apostle Parley Parker Pratt, and theconnection of his death as partial justication for the massacre. The author writes, “…But the Mormons were deeply infuriated; they held every Arkansas man personally responsible for the murder of their Apostle,” referring to Pratt, “whom they at once canonized as saint, and worshipped as martyr, and whose name, to this day, is spoken with reverence by them; and the fact that any of these emigrants were from that state, gave them, as they thought an opportunity of revenging Pratt’s death, at the same time that they had avenged the murder of their Prophet.” Parley Parker Pratt was a polygamist with at least 12, and possibly up to 14 wives, the last wife being previously married to Pratt’s killer, an angry ex-husband. I came to recognize my ancestors involvement in the terrible deeds perpetrated upon the Fancher Party. Although I have not found any direct family link to any specific murderer, my descendents were not guiltless. I acknowledge having loving good people among my descendents. However, I openly confess the sins family family and religious pride, blind obedience/fear in following the mandates of Brigham Young not to feed or sell sell anything to members of the emigrant train, ancestral belief and practice in following the Mormon doctrine of Blood Atonement, passing on evil accounts of the Fancher Party, justification, gloating over the deaths of those massacred, and covering up or lying about the MMM that makes my family/descendents accountable. I am a Christian, not Mormon. I am deeply saddened by my family sin, and I would like to ask forgiveness on behalf of my descendents for any role that has been played in the MMM, as well as for any evil spoken about members of the emigrant party. I believe that the inquities of the fathers are passed on to the third and fourth generations, and my family, too, has suffered much. Please forgive us. Thank you.

It was only two hours ago that I heard an item on a British Broadcasting Corporation radio programme in which a speaker who's name I did not catch, about the Meadow Mountain Masscre. I had no knowledge about this prior to the radio item. It was a moving piece and I shall be researching more in the future. It is not surprising that here in the UK it is not well known but I have always been interested in American history although only on a fairly superficial level, but I have never come across this tragic event before. My thoughts will be with you on the 150th anniversary on the 11th. Sincerely Derek Crawley.

The managing director of the Family and Church History Department of the Mormon Church has written an article on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and it is published in the September issue Church's official English language magazine. This magazine is very widely read in the LDS church. You can find the article by going to www.lds.org and clicking on the Gospel Library link. It is the first article on that page.

I am a historian, and have been interested in this event in American history for some time. This event should be made into a feature film, however, my own bias is that it was a Mormon action directed by higher authorities, and duly covered up over the years. For obvious reasons, such a feature film will probably never be made. However, that there is reconciliation for families on both sides, is a good thing, indeed. SG

Thank you for this very informative site. I am about to go see the movie September Dawn. Knowing that film makers have their biases as well as editing decisions that have to be made to fit the story into two hours time, I wanted to know as much about the actual events as possible before viewing the film. I believe I have found the most authoritative source in existence in your website. The victims and their decendents deserve not only to have their memory honored and preserved, but also the actual historical facts of this atrocity as closely as they can be ascertained. Again, thank you!

My dad's family, Poteete, and his mother's family, Evans, were all from NW Ark. I am originally from NW Arkansas. We know that my dad had relatives that were in one of the wagon trains that went west in 1857, but it was not the Fancher wagon train. There was a Poteet wagon train that eventually made it out west and then eventually members back to what is now Poteet, Tx. The Poteet that headed that train describes in a book how he and other members of their party took a different route and did not get massacred. I visited Harrison, Ark and have seen the memorial on the square there. I am glad it is there. I think people need to remember that tragedy. My mother has information from her genealogy work on my dad's side. I don't know if any of those who were murdered were our kin or not, but they might have been. My dad's ancestors all lived around Boxley, Compton, Jasper, and even had a grist mill that is now in the national forest. It is only able to be found by mule. My cousins located it a few years back with the help of a forest ranger. Even if the massacred weren't related they deserve to be remembered with reverence and what happened to them to not be forgotten. I wish the place in Utah was not so far away or I would go visit and pay my respects. I cannot believe such a tragedy has been forgotten by so many. It reminds me of the " Battle of the Washita" massacre in western Ok. that until a few years ago didn't even have a sign up or anything. At last there is a memorial for the Indian Massacre. I am glad that there is a Mtn. Meadows Massacre Association to help keep the memories of the innocent alive. I would like to go to the 150th memorial. I hope that those who do go take a movie so others can view what takes place. Thanks. DJ

Greetings Everyone: I'll be fifty-eight next month, and I only learned of the massacre when my wife and me moved to St. George, Utah, in 1995. Having been a student of history since the age of six, I was dumfounded that I knew nothing of the tragedy, and immmediately questioned why it had not been taught in California's public schools. After a decade in Utah (1995-2005), the question now seems silly. I was delighted to learn a film would bring the story to thousands of people. Unfortunately, the reviews of the latter have not been stellar. I can only hope that - if the film goes down in critical flames, your organization will use the opportunity and timing to get in front of the media to simply relate what happened. I find nothing more offensive than religious bigotry. Thank-you for keeping the story alive. It not only is a testament to your relatives, but to all who seek truth in the past. Best Regards

Having lived in and traveled in this area for over 30 years I am very familiar with the settlements, towns, routes traveled. As hard as I try I just cant find a way to forgive the perpetrators or the Mormon Church or the U.S.Government. I'll visit the site again in September. Someday if I keep trying I hope to come to some sort of peace in my own mind.

Nancy Saphrona Huff (married to George Cates) was my great-graet grandmother. I have a copy of a statement that she made to the Dardanelle Independent Arkansian, August 20, 1875. I recently heard through the new's that a movie was coming out that sounded an awful lot like a family story that I had come across a few years ago when researching my own family geneology. Untill I heard about this through the news, I had no Idea of the significants that this story would have to my owm life. Without the exsistance of my g-g- grandmoter huff-cate's I would not be here today. She was the only survivor from my family line. I have a strong love for my family heritage. Thank you for this website, I appreciate the effort that was made to start it. I am proud to be a desendant of this family. With a name like mine I am often mistaken for an LDS member, and have known only a little about the 1857 incident until lately. The recent motion picture may spark enough interest to make everyone take a fresh look at the massacre, and perhaps finally find more than one sacrificial lamb was responsible. And by that I mean, B. Young.

I have no ax to grind about people of particular faiths! All the Mormans I have met were fine people! When my car broke down outside of Provo Utah..A family really helped me get it going! I just wonder about the politics that...so effectively covered this up and prevented real"justice"from being done...that is shamefull! I do not think The Mormon Church can claim a lot of persicution , if it was so this was the perfect excuse to go after it! I really don't want to ever hear those excuses...for doing this...none of them have the ring of truth...they are just excuses and even if the worse were true...what was done was so horible...nothing justifies that! Get over the denial and cover up...and own it otherwise one is stuck in the past and never moves on! Teaching where fanaticism can take one is the only way of saving individuls from cultish group think...all Religions have this potential for evil fanatisism! I know the Mormons were persicuted earlier...and those perpetrators also escaped justice. Learn to think on your own! Don't get into them or us...all people have an equal right to live and not be catagorized, and dehumanized!

I have passed by this area countless times. I have heard rumours and references to this massacre at various times in my life but never really took notice until today. I am, for some reason, deeply touched by this event and it's aftermath. I, too, feel that this event should be remembered and not forgotten nor should the victims and perpetrators be forgotten. I hope that from such remembrance some good can come from it. Perhaps such an event will never be allowed to occur again.

I have been been caught up with the MMM since growing up as a child and listening to this historical tragedy related to me by a grandson and daughter-in-law of John D. Lee through his wife,Emma. There was no denial of John D. Lee's part in it but they believed his claim that he acted on the orders of Brigham Young. The more I read, I feel convinced of it, as well. While I'm still "Out" on my final verdict, since new things keep cropping up in the books I read, I do feel Brigham Young ordered the massacre and he and his cronies were part of a massive cover up of these and other misdeeds. Basically, I believe the Fancher train exhibited quite a bit of wealth and they were deliberately waylaid to seize it--none of their own misdeeds ring true to me. I DO believe the stories circulating about the Fancher group was deliberate in nature to rationalize Mormans to participate in the massacre--even possibly Lee, as he claimed. While Lee seemed to have possessed alot of the "spoils of war", I doubt that much of the misdeeds heaped upon him were all true. He definitely was made a scapegoat and outcast by the Mormons, some who were as guilty or more guilty than he may have been.

To Whom this may be read, I recently visited The Mountain Meadows massacre Site in Southern Utah. As you know already this site is of great historical importance. I am wondering why our government has not purchased this site from the LDS Church? It is a sham to have the instigators of an incredible American tragedy be the "caretakers" of this historical site. Especially when it was American Soldiers who buried what was left of the bodies at that site. They have said that they are "caretakers" of this site. But when I visited this site last Saturday on my way from California to Idaho, I was very dismayed that our own Department of the interior has not deemed it necessary to take care of this grave of brave Americans who were murdered by orders of the LDS Church leadership in 1847. Problems with the site 1. I found that signs from the road did not identify the site properly. It only identified it as "Mountain Meadows", Not "Mountain Meadows massacre Site" like it should be identified as. "Mountain Meadows" could have been a golf course for all I knew. 2. When I arrived at the site there were dirty diapers all around the parking lot because there were no trash cans anywhere. Nor bathroom facilities. This is the only LDS owned site that I have ever seen neglected. Funny isn't it? 3. I also have a problem with the LDS Church advertising that they erected the new burial (mound) cairn as if this single act absolved the Church of its crime in the murders of 120 Men, women and Children. 4. The LDS Church has never issued a formal apology for their part i.e. Church Stake leaders from Cedar City and Salt lake giving orders to massacre the wagon Train. In my opinion The LDS church is not worthy to even own this site. They are still trying to cover their sins. What a shame to any visitor who is curious as to the significance of this site. 5. There must be hundreds of sites where there was historical effusion of bloodshed that have been taken care of by the Dept of the Interior. This one in my opinion deserves better. That means a objective truthful examination by our our Federal Government as to the worthiness of including this as a Historical Monument. Sincerely, David Messenger Idaho Falls, Idaho dpmessage@msn.com

In 1994, I purchased a Kelsey hiking book that included the story about the MMM and I used the book as a guide for a backpacking trip down Paria Canyon. I didn't become interested in the MMM until I found a Jan. 1988 copy of Arizona Highways magazine, which had a story about the massacre and "following the footsteps of John D. Lee as he travelled down the Paria to establish Lee's Ferry". I then put it all together and became fascinated with the tragic story. I put together a slide show to include the incredible scenery of southern Utah and the MMM. It's unfortunate what happened, but somewhat understandable, considering the 20 years prior to the event. I'm not a Mormon, but I was taught that one of the primary reasons for the settlement of this country was to have religious freedom. Unfortunately, that freedom is sometimes limited, or restrictive, if you do not "subscribe to MY beliefs"! In Ireland the Catholics and Protestants have fought each other. Today, in Iraq, the Sunnis and Shiites can get along. Someone once said there is danger in organized religion...and, sadly, it seems to be.

While nothing can or should be said to diminish the suffering of the members of the wwagon train. Everyone seems to forget they were not the only victims. John Doyle Lee paid with his life. ut his family and desendents paid the price many times over. No one has ever stopped to think about what the church and its members did the many wives and children of John Doyle Lee and how the church victiminzed them as well. I am a desendant of the last son of the first wife of John Doyle Lee. I have grown up with the story and the story of what happened to the family afterward.

Thanks for your site. This incident has fascinated me since I was a kid. ( At 43, I'm still considered a kid by some!) I agree with one of your responses that the feds should take over the memorial site from the LDS for obvious reasons. After all, the LDS church is still sugar-coating their ancestors atrocities.

The Mountain Meadows Massacre continues to generate a lot of emotion. Could not that immense energy be focused forward in time as well as backward? Could our own pain from the past help prevent future pain for others? My post to this site in 2003 follows: "May I share my thoughts about the highest purpose of the Mountain Meadows Association. I attended the dedication of the first new monument up on the hill in Utah. Just before I arrived at the meadows I remember wondering why I had left my work to drive to Utah. That feeling changed the instant I stepped on the ground. The place fairly vibrated with energy. I saw a man about my age walking back from the monument and felt immediately drawn to him and anxious to meet him. I thought he must be a relative, but I learned that our ancestors had first met and parted at Mountain Meadows. I remember at the more informal meeting everyone seemed to think we needed to start an organization, but no one seemed really clear on what the mission of the organization should be. The Mormons, the Indians and the Arkansans who were there made contact with each other, and knew that doing so was important. President Hinckley, then a counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remarked that we had witnessed a miracle and that we had “built a bridge across a chasm of bitterness” The main purpose of the Mountain Meadows Association is to maintain that bridge and keep it in good repair. Although there may be other purposes, they should not overshadow that main purpose. We don’t need an organization of historians to talk and write about the massacre. But we could certainly use their help in maintaining the bridge. We really don’t need a single organization to perpetuate the memory of the massacre or the victims. We can safely say neither the Arkansans nor the Mormons had forgotten the massacre before the association came into being, and it is not likely that they will soon forget if the association were to fade away. But the organization can help us have better memories of the massacre. When the association was formed it was the coming together of two very distinct groups, like the yin and the yang, the opposites interacted, each in their distinct way but within the same circle of love of God and respect for man. When the Navajo Indians weave a blanket or basket, they never close a circle because an evil spirit may be trapped inside. One need look no further than the pages of this guestbook to see that for some, an evil spirit of hatred still lives. For that reason, we should not try to bind the differing sides too closely. The organization needs to be an open circle of good will where the different spirits can come and go as needed and desired. It should not close any group out, and it should not close any one in. When God created the world, he separated the light from the darkness, and the waters from the dry land. But then he brought them together at dawn and dusk and along the seashore. The meaning is created where different things touch. We spell things out in black and white, not all black on one page, all white on the next, or page after page of gray. When the Mountain Meadows Association was formed it was very obvious that we stood on different continents, and we still do. But we built a bridge because it was a good thing and it was needed. I am sure the devil laughed at the Mountain Meadows --laughed at the dead and dying, and laughed at those who killed them, just as surely as he laughed when he got God’s chosen people to crucify the Son of their God. We are not enemies of each other. Satan is our real enemy. He will laugh until we, Christ-like, raise good up from evil. I would like to see the association dedicated to peacemaking, to crisis intervention, to using the mistakes of the past to prevent similar mistakes in the future. Could a Fancher and a Lee together persuade neighbors or even enemies to forgive and forget? This association should train and supply mediators. We are qualified by history to do so. I have heard uncounted sermons on forgiveness, but none so meaningful to me as when a Fancher spoke at a memorial service in Utah years ago. Let us build bridges not only for our own use, but for others as well."

As a former member of the church that perpetrated this atrocity, I find it appalling that members are still being taught that the Paiutes were the perpetrators and that the church was wrongly accused. They hide behind their lies, change historical facts where they can, forbid their members from reading or seeing anything that sheds any negative light on the church, and presents a false front to the world. Congratulations on your site that presents the facts, not fiction!

I have been a member of the LDS Church all my life. I had never heard of the massacre until my husband took me to the sight in the early 70's. I was raised in Provo, Utah. The cover up by the church upsets me. I have read numerous books on the subject. In September 2001 I was on a wagon train that left Spanish Fork Utah, and went on to California. Our wagon train camped at the MMM sight. The Sunday, a week, after 9/11, we were there. The local LDS ward scouts raised the flag back up to full staff. The night before we left the sight, we slept in a covered wagon, and we could see the American flag from the opening. I get tears in my eyes as I am writing this. Words cannot express how I felt at that time. Here our country had just experienced the most terrible terrorist attack ever, and I was on the spot where another terrible attacked occured. That place is very sacred to me, and I cry whenever I go there. I would really like to come to St. George in September. I am making plans to join you. Meeting you people would be a honor. sharon murphy

The past seems to still have a haunting effect on both sides of the desendents. Friends, As a direct descendant of at least three prominent men who were apparently involved in these sad events 150 years ago, I don't know how much any of my words can make a difference in this day and age. I'm not sure what I should say. But I feel I should say something. From what I know of my Latter-day Saint ancestors, they were in large part very great people who loved the Lord and exercised great faith by working hard for spiritual goals. They were admirable in so many ways. But the participation of good people in such a horrible crime is almost inexplicable and certainy inexcusable. I'm so sorry for the injustice that was inflicted upon those innocent travellers, and I think about that every time I drive through Mountain Meadows on Highway 18. At this point in time, all I can pray for is that God will right all injustices and bless us all to endure the trials of this life and to learn to love and accept each other more. My thoughts are with these people and all of their family members. Aloha from Utah's Dixie, Steve Swapp

My father, W. C. Dunlap, born 1912, told us about the 'Dunlap family mystery' - how wagon loads of Dunlaps left for CA in the mid 1880s and were never heard from again. My sister and I never asked any more about it, unfortunately. I'm not sure from where they would have been coming, I do know the DUNLAP family I'm related to lived mostly in HARRISON KY during that time. However, the relatives my father referred to have lived somewhere else. One of your investigators answered an inquiry of mine several years ago, and said the Dunlaps involved came from ARK. I belive it's possible wagons in the train may have gone through ARK, but all might not all have originated from that point. I understand that contrary to what I was told, all the young orphans were not returned to their extended families, and were instead, adopting by Mormon familes. Consequently, not all familes were informed of their fate.

Please find some way to make it known on your website that the movie that is coming out about the massacre is controversial. The movie depicts that Brigham Young ordered the massacre which is completely false. Brigham Young ordered them not to kill anyone but the message did not get there in time. I felt that this movie wrongly depicts Brigham Young. It deeply offended me. Please make viewers of your website aware that this movie does not depict your views of the role of Brigham Young.

I have a Jesse Dunlap from Arkansas that my relatives have said died in Utah. I am related to his granddaughter Amanda Dunlap. Does anyone know if the Dunlaps in the Mountain Meadows Massacre ever owned slaves in Arkansas or other states. Does anyone know if Jesse Dunlap who died in 1857 at Mountain Meadows had any Indian blood from the Arkansas area.

I enjoyed visiting your site today. I am impressed with the amount of information you have. I will be attempting to contact the Dunlap researchers listed, as I have a friend who believe he might be related to that Family.

I am overwhelmed at the reports and it disturbs be that nothing was ever done to correct the wrong that was committed on our families. I would love to be a part of this organization or any organization that keeps this story alive. I will be joining and contributing to the cause. As a retired Officer of the Law it really strikes a blow with me. Phillip Hightower

I once read about the massacre in 1972, so on my way out there,on the way to California I stopped and visited the site. I must say it was off the road quite a way's It looked li8ke it was cement basement, at that time, lots of weeds etc, I drove as close to it as possible, and drove up a little rise, good thing I did as I shut my car off and stood there for at least an hour and onehalf. It was kind of weird, to be in that place after all the years ago what had happened there. So I went to my car,and started it,or I tried ,it wouldn't start, starter would'nt turn over, now what, as it is along way up to main hiway! Luck would have it, my car was a manual shift,so i give it a push off that little rise, threw it in third and popped the clutch! it bearly started, and I put in the clutch, and sweated that it would stay running, It did! and I got out of there, I have never been back, I will be back for Sept 11th 2007, I just started reading about the place again. I'm glad the site was fixed up! Gene G Berger 2595 Highway# 10 Mandan North Dakota 58554 It was all such a weird coventc.adence... Thanks for a nice info pack on the site!!

Gene Sessions gave me this web address. I visted the Meadows in January 2007. I felt deep sadness for what happened at the site. I am very interested in the Mtn. Meadows and the events that happened there.

Greeting to the good folks at MMA. I am an overland narrative historian from California and the Fancher Train has been a particular interest of mine. I would like to see Basil G. Parker's pamphlet "Recollections of the Mountain Meadow Massacre" reprinted. Parker was from Arkansas also and the train he was in came right after the Massacre had occurred. The Danites instilled such fear in him that he did not write his recollections until 1901. You probably know all of this but I thought I'd mention it. Nice website, Mark Mortenson

The movie about the massacre is supposed to be out May 4, 2007. Director Christopher Cain's "September Dawn," a new theatrical motion picture that is a fictional Romeo and Juliet relationship love story, will open on 1,000 screens nationwide on May 4. I found an old envelope from one C.B. Morse, US Forest Service, to a "Mrs. A.C. MacCam" (or "McCain") in the rafters of a house in North Ogden, Utah in about 1946. Inside the envelope is Page 28 of a report or letter written of observations taken at Mountain Meadows on "the 16th instant." Names mentioned include Capt. Reuben O. Campbell, Judge Cradlebaugh, Doctor Brewer and Hamblin. The page is torn and discolored. Is the MMA interested in this old relic? Harold V. Anderson 34 Andreas Court Novato, California 94945

I really enjoyed reading about my family history on the massacre. My great great grandmother was Tryphena fancher (Wilson). I am from the Wilson side. My mother is the daughter of Raymond Wilson which is the son of Henry which is the son of Tryphena. I went on the trail ride with my family in carrollton. We really enjoyed the ride. I'm hoping to get to go to Utah for the last few miles of the ride. Keep up the good work and best wishes. Mark McClure

A great site! I'm delighted a commemoration will be held. And, yes, forgiveness is divine as only The Good Lord is able to know all and judge accordingly. A tragedy, certainly.

Thank you for providing this website. I consider myself an avid news watcher, but somehow I never heard about this until researching the Eaton and Fancher families in Carroll County, Arkansas. I have not been able to find out much about William M. Eaton. It saddens me that no one has represented him at any of the memorials. He may or may not be a member of my family, but I honor him, anyway. I probably will not be able to attend the 2007 memorial, but I will be there in spirit, for William.
